The configuration “Marconi” is based on the “Outdoor” model and is designed to meet the project requirements. The name comes from the site of the first intallation of this configuration (Via Marconi, Mendatica Municipality, IM, Italy). The following figure describes the general architecture scheme.

 Measuring Chain

The measuring chain is featured at each site of installation by the coupling of a third party tipping bucket rain gauge and a remote station realized in compliance of the ACRONET Paradigm. The station hosts the Datalogger and rice-transmission of data functionalities. The link to the ACRONETWORK infrastructure is direct, through the GPRS module mounted in the station.

 Devices and physical connections

The selected measuring instrument is the rain gauge “PL400” produced by NESA Srl with a Bucket in realized in inox steel and compliant with the WMO Standards.

The station is the device ACROSTATION family "O" (outdoor) in its release 02a. In particular, the instrument has an internal antenna GPRS and dedicated power module (PCB Power ACROBoard VO1 and r04 battery).

The station also contains the electronic board ACROboard "Station" v01 r09 for data collecting and transmitting.

The connection between the two devices is done through the shielded cable supplied with the sensor.

Signals, data and protocols

The station receives the signal of the sensor generating with the same continuity the timeseries of data in native format. The firmware of the configurataion allows the metadating, the integration in time, and an early check of the accuracy by filtering eventual anomalous values.

Finally, the GPRS module transmits data according with the configuration file, normally in compliance with a simple HTTP not encripted protocol.


Considering the solar radiation characteristics of the site, the power is supplied exclusively by the solar panel the station is equipped with.


To make the configuration operational, the corresponding firmware (available at the bottom of this page) has to be installed, by using the appropriate programmer, in the MIC which is mounted on the ACROboard Station (equipping the station itself). Similarly, at the first run, the base configuration file (available at the bottom of this page) that makes available the dialog with the ACRONETWORK infrastructure has to be uploaded.

 Mounting and Installing

To mount the station, two inox steel poles are required. The first, eventually available with the instrument, is used to fix the rain gauge 1 m. from the ground. This pole can be fixed to the soil (or to a hard base) by using the 4 holes available in the rectangular base (bolts not included). The second steel pole, 2 m. long, hosts the fasteners to place both the station and the solar panel.

This area includes both the firmware dedicated to this specific Configuration and the basic implementation. You can use the firmware to manage the electronic side of the apparatuses, while the basic implementation is fundamental to run the system (define parameters, position, etc.). The Firmware is the program (sequence of instructions) that has to be integrated directly into the microcontroller placed on the ACROBoard selected for the Configuration. Basic Implementation
